Teltonika RUT950 – New Power Connector and Telit 4G Module

Teltonika have announced today that the Teltonika RUT950 will be produced with a new terminal power connection.

Teltonika also announced that they will be replacing the existing Huawei 4G Modem and replace it with a new CAT4 Telit 4G Modem.

So for 4G connectivity the main benefit is the move to a CAT4 module to hopefully provide better download speeds – of course your maximum download and upload speeds for the RUT950 4G Router will depend upon distance to 4G base Station and the number of simultaneous users and the mobile networks bandwidth and service restrictions.

Once Teltonika start production of the revised RUT950 4G Router then the old barrel style connector will no longer be available.  replacement power supplies will need to be specially ordered and are expected to be more expensive than the normal mains power supplies.

New Low Price of £70.00 For The Teltonika RUT500 3G Router

The Teltonika RUT500 is probably the cheapest M2M 3G Router in the UK – priced at just £70.00 each + VAT the RUT500 Industrial Grade embedded 3G Router provides a low cost, reliable solution for remote monitoring and management applications that require a 3G mobile broadband Internet connection.

The RUT500 3G Router provides the user with 3 x Ethernet LAN Ports, 802.11n WiFi and an RJ45 Ethernet WAN Port.

To get connected to the 3G Internet service simply remove the front panel of the router (where the antennas are connected) and insert your 3G SIM Card – this can be a normal 3G mobile broadband SIM card or a Fixed IP SIM Card.  If you are using the Teltonika RUT500 for remote monitoring or management then you would be better off using a Fixed IP SIM card service because many normal 3G SIM cards ordered directly from the mobile networks use CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) which means that your router 3G connection will only get a private IP address from the mobile network which means that you won’t be able to connect to the router over the Internet which means that you can’t use DYNDNS and because you can’t remotely connect to the RUT500 then port forwarding will not work to connect to your devices on the LAN.

In fact, the only network that provides a public IP address using a standard network SIM card is 3mobile and you need to use the APN of 3internet in order to get the router to request a public IP address when it connects.  this is not a guaranteed service so sometimes you will not get a public IP address so you will be unable to connect to your router and it is not a contractual part of your service and may be stopped at any time in which case you will still be liable for the rentals for the remainder of the contract and will then be left with no choice but to switch to a Fixed IP SIM card service so you would then need to visit each site and switch out the SIM cards.

For this reason many M2M users will opt for the convenience of a Fixed IP SIM card service.

The Teltonika RUT500 3G router also includes features like ping reboot so it can actively monitor the 3G connection and when the mobile network disconnects the router it will be recognised and will be able to reboot and reconnect to the 3G service eliminating the need for time consuming and expensive site visits to power cycle your 3G router.

TELTONIKA RUT500 Port Forwarding using DYNDNS (using Three Mobile SIM Card)

The following video demonstrates how to configure the RUT500 with a 3 Mobile SIM (using the APN 3internet) to get a public IP address allocated to the router so that the router can be accessed over the internet and then configuring port forwarding to connect to an IP camera on the LAN. It demonstrates that using a different APN the router will connect to the internet but will be given a PRIVATE IP address which means that you will be unable to connect to the router over the Internet and in this case will not be able to use port forwarding.

The video also explains the imporance of ensuring that the device on the LAN is correctly configured to ensure that it has the correct IP address AND default gateway and demonstrates what happens if the default gateway is incorrect or missing which is one of the most common reasons that port forwarding does not work.
